The Northern Gateway of the Inland Empire

Metaline Falls marked the farthest reach of the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway and the head of steamboat navigation on the Pend Oreille River. In the early 1900s, both rail and river carried ore, cement, and timber from the valley’s mines and mills south to Spokane’s industries. Steamboats hauled freight along the winding waters while trains pushed north toward the Canadian border, making Metaline Falls a vital junction between the Inland Empire’s frontier resources and its growing commercial heart.
